Our Community Cares: Part 1--Stop the War on Women
by Ellen Rossi
The Blog Lives On
We’re resurrecting our blog! Humble Sea is truly only as rad as the sum of its parts, so we’re encouraging members of our staff to tell the stories that matter to them.
On May 15th, Alabama passed the most extreme abortion ban since Roe V. Wade became law. But it wasn’t just Alabama- over fifteen states are pushing these bans. These laws are a direct threat to the reproductive freedom that women have had for over four decades. Politicians are openly defying the American people, whose support for access to safe, legal abortion is at an all-time high.
I knew I had to take action. I wanted to have an event as soon as possible to raise awareness about this proposed legislation before it was too late. I reached out to Taylor and Frank, two of our owners, for permission to host a fundraiser benefitting Planned Parenthood on Memorial Day, one of the busiest days of the year at Humble Sea. With no hesitation whatsoever, they gave us the green light. We had just seven days to pull this fundraiser off!
Immediately, we started reaching out to local artists and business owners, prepared for a fair amount of rejection. There was none. Support for the cause poured out generously from the Santa Cruz community. We received dozens of giveaway prizes that had all been handcrafted and donated for one purpose-to ensure that our fellow sisters, daughters, mothers, and friends will always have access to our hard-won reproductive rights.
Our fundraiser raised $4000 in donations! The turnout and support we received from our community of beer lovers who aren’t afraid to address issues that matter was so inspiring. We’re excited to see what the future holds with such a talented, empowered, and motivated group of patrons. Thank you to everyone who came out, drank our beer, volunteered their time, crafted giveaway prizes, took photos, tagged us on social media, made flyers, attended goat yoga, participated in our screen printing table, and rocked our “GRL POWER” shirts!
Support our next cause on Saturday, July 20th. We’re partnering with Santa Cruz Waves, as well as Mountainside Jewelry, Upcycled Skate Art, Crimson Organic Surf Wax, & Sequoia Seaweeds to raise money for Santa Cruz Waves' upcoming documentary.
The film will focus on raising awareness about the environmental impact of allowing cruise ships in the Monterey Bay. Topics include sonic impacts on marine mammals, air contamination due to emissions, the release of pollution into the ocean, and examination protections by the National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS).
Come drink for a cause, and stay tuned for Part 2 of Our Community Cares blog series!
