Craft: An Activity Involving Skill In Making Things By Hand
Santa Cruz County varies within an array of backdrops and forefronts along California’s central coast. The spirit of Santa Cruz is amongst the farmlands and sheer cliffs of the “Slow Coast”, center stage on one of its many beaches, or strategically nestled within its timbered hills. Santa Cruz has an abundance of green: green fields, green forests, green rooms (Yes, for growing crops & for getting barrelled) but most importantly green ideas.
Martijn Stiphout and David Dennis, owners of Ventana Surfboards, have constructed a business emphasizing green principles. Martijn, the master craftsman, bends, alters and shapes landfill destined materials until they gel in perfect synchronicity. Their products are constructed from a variety of leftover materials including fence wood, guitar necks, floor boards, drift wood, plastics, and old wetsuits. The conclusion: the perfect combination of aesthetics and functionality, surfboards that look like a Rolls Royce yet perform like a Ferrari.
After spending a few hours visiting with Martijn and his apprentices at their shop, we were hooked. Humble Sea loves Ventana’s philosophy. Humble Sea loves their products. Most importantly, Humble Sea wanted to get deep inside some tasty barrells and Martijn was the gatekeeper. Hand crafted from old guitar necks (Santa Cruz Guitar Company) and offcuts of O'Neill wetsuits, Martijn customized two magnificent wooden handplanes on our behalf. The result was spectacular!
