Kicking Off Our Nano-Cast of Barrel-Aged Beers
With a 1 BBL brewing system on the way we purchased 8, 10-gallon oak barrels from Venus Spirits inspired to ramp up our barrel-aging program. Located off Swift Street on the westside of Santa Cruz, Venus Spirits is a craft distillery responsible for producing organic small-batch whiskey, gin and blue agave spirits. With remnants of agave and bourbon, these oak barrels provide the perfect playground for Nick Pavlina to mastermind a lineup of unique and funky flavored beers.
Fact (1): people love barrel aged beers.
Fact (2): Nick loves making barrel aged beers. But why? The lengthy process is not nearly as lucrative as ales and everything short of instant gratification. However, aging your beer in barrels can add exciting new depths of aroma and flavor to the final product. Beer aged in oak barrels will absorb residual chemical components present in the wood. Aromatic, florally, caramelly, and pungent flavors are pulled from the wood and driven into the beer. POP, like a balloon under too much pressure, your taste buds will burst from flavor.
Inspired by beer pioneers like Russian River Brewing Co., Humble Sea is ready to kickoff a nano-cast of barrel aged beers. But what's to come? In six to twelve months, Humble Sea could have a supply of aged barley wine, a Mexican IPL aged in tequila barrels, a high gravity Playita or Yacht Club with enriched tastiness. As scheming ensues, we want to hear from our community about the type of barrel-aged beers you would like to try from us.
