In a world where businesses are plagued by sharks, NDAs and paranoia, craft beer travels the path of community and support. Craft beer doesn’t aide in the formation of barriers but rather the continuity of community and passion; one reason why beer is the best business in the world.

Corralitos, Uncommon, NuBo, Hermitage, 32 North, and most recently Discretion, have all allocated time to discuss the nuts and bolts of cultivating a thriving craft beer business. Since we’re small, eager, and have yet to sell a pint, we take every opportunity to learn from the people who know the ropes.

Tuesday was the perfect example. Jay Van Pykeren, a longtime humble friend and current Discretion hired gun, provided an introduction to the hard working men and women who keep Discretion ticking. Dustin Vereker, Discretion’s liaison, and Michael Demers, Discretion’s brewmaster, hosted a facility tour, answering questions and providing guidance.

Discretion appears ubiquitous and for good reason. The cleanliness and organization of their brewhouse facilitates a lineup of quality beers infused with flavor. With plans of expansion and new ideas constantly formulating, the time is near before Santa Cruz is known as an iconic beer hub; Discretion Brewing at the helm.

Postscript: In other exciting news, The Jerk House, Santa Cruz’s first Jamaican jerk restaurant, will be opening its doors tomorrow (Friday, 10/23)! With locally sourced products and an array of alluring items, the Jerk House brings something fresh and exciting to the table. Can’t wait!
